Catherine Macdonald

BFA (Printmaking)

Design Technician

Catherine works part-time for Dalgleish Architects, where she enjoys the problem-solving aspects of architecture and the social interaction of a busy office.

She lives in an old church hall that was originally constructed in the 1870s, but has since then sadly been subjected to many unsympathetic alterations that are doing their best to hide it’s beauty. It is, however, a wonderful art studio and perfect for her heavy printing press and many woodworking tools and art supplies.

Catherine is a prominent New Zealand printmaker who exhibits nationally and regularly participates in community exhibitions and projects. She graduated in 1997 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts majoring in Printmaking from the Quay School of Fine Arts, and is a past winner of the Sarjeant Arts Review. She is one of the founders of the Whanganui Artists Open Studios event and a former committee member of the Whanganui Literary Festival. In 1998 she was Community Artist in Residence for the Community Arts Council Whanganui, and she partook in residences in 1999 at Pompallier in Russell, 2017 at The Art Vault, Mildura, Australia, and in 2020 she was the In-Print resident at The Caselberg Trust in Dunedin. As well as printmaking her working includes bookbinding, drawing, writing and furniture making, and is held in the public collections of the Sarjeant Gallery in New Zealand, the State Library of Victoria and the Print Council of Australia, and private collections throughout New Zealand, Australia, America and Europe. She also designs greeting cards and stationary that are available locally at the Sarjeant Gallery and Paige’s bookshop.

When she’s not working on her art or in the office, she’s spending time with her grumpy cat Fluffy and attempting to encourage birds into her overgrown garden.
