Te Ruamātatoru – He Whata Kai is thought to be the first pātaka to be built on Te Whanganui Awa in 100 years and is an important focal point for the Ngāti Ruaka hapū. Sitting at the centre of the community, the pātaka is the heart and focus of a wider initiative to engage mokopuna in a garden-to-table educational program.  It was completed in collaboration with Dr Rāwiri Tinirau, director of Te Atawhai o Te Ao and facilitator of wānanga for Te Morehu Whenua. The sign above the door was designed by Nina Churchward Van Lier, who is of Ngāti Ruaka descent.

The project team of Craig and Sharee Dalgleish and Catherine Macdonald were in Ōtautahi to accept the award in person at the ceremony held last night at Te Pae Christchurch Convention Centre, alongside Dr Rāwiri Tinirau and Ngāti Ruaka rangatahi.

“Te Ruamātatoru – He Whata Kai is a powerful tribute to the preservation of history and culture. Through meticulous research and the careful study of a remnant pātaka, the architect has expertly replicated the dimensions, materials, and form of the original structure. The result is a remarkable project that not only honours the past but also serves as a beacon for future generations. This building stands as a testament to the architect’s deep respect for cultural heritage, in partnership with Ngāti Ruaka. Te Ruamātatoru preserves the architectural essence of its historical predecessor, while incorporating modern construction methods to ensure both its durability and relevance. This project represents a harmonious blend of tradition and innovation, creating a space that is as educational as it is inspiring in its wairua.”
